ʻAhuʻula are cloaks made from as many as 500,000 individual feathers attached to an olonā fiber mesh, worn by the aliʻi (chief) class in ancient Hawaiʻi. In addition to signifying the wearer's high rank, ʻahuʻula also served as an indicator of status, political position and conquest. Beautiful and prized, ʻahuʻula are a striking and unique symbol of ancient Hawaiian royalty. Also incorporated into the design are the mahiʻole (helmet) on the hood and the lei niho palaoa (whale bone necklace) around the neck.

On the right sleeve is a brief history of the Battle of Mokuʻōhai, where Paiea (Kamehameha the Great) defeated Kiwalaʻō (the former owner of this ʻahuʻula) and earned this ʻahuʻula in his victory. On the left sleeve is the island and location of the Battle of Mokuʻōhai.
