ʻAhuʻula are cloaks made from as many as 500,000 individual feathers attached to an olonā fiber mesh, worn by the aliʻi (chief) class in ancient Hawaiʻi. In addition to signifying the wearer's high rank, ʻahuʻula also served as an indicator of status, political position and conquest. Beautiful and prized, ʻahuʻula are a striking and unique symbol of ancient Hawaiian royalty. Also incorporated into the design are the mahiʻole (helmet) on the hood and the lei niho palaoa (whale bone necklace) around the neck.

On the right sleeve is a brief history of Keaweaheulu Kaluaʻapana, High Chief of Waiʻanae, Oʻahu, Chief Adviser to Kamehameha the Great and ancestor of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani. On the left sleeve is the island and location of Keaweaheulu's birthplace.
