Created for Hālau Hula ʻO Hokulani for the 44th Annual Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Competition, this hoodie is dedicated to the High Chiefess Ululani, Aliʻi Nui of Hilo, renown composer, and wife to High Chief Keaweaheulu Kaluaʻapana. The imagery seen throughout the hoodie is based on the mele written by Manuʻaikohana Boyd entitled “Hoʻoheno Ululani” and performed by Hālau Hula ʻO Hokulani. The design features lehua mamo and the beloved ʻiʻiwi and mamo forest birds. On the hood is a lei hulu, a symbol of rank of the aliʻi wahine.
On the right sleeve is a chant created by Ululani herself entitled “He Mele Aloha Nō Kamehameha”, a proclamation of loyalty and welcome to Kamehameha I. On the left sleeve is Hilo, the location of Uluaniʻs home and rule.
